Galveston port director to lead Port Everglades
Steven Cernak, CEO at the Port of Galveston, will be the new leader at Port Everglades, which just gained Broward County Commission approval for a new $72 million Florida East Coast Railway Florida East Coast Railway intermodal yard.
Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry announced Tuesday that Cernak will replace Phillip C. Allen, who is retiring Feb. 3 after leading Port Everglades since 2006. Cernak's start date has not been finalized.
"Mr. Cernak has big shoes to fill, but his experience as a port director and background in seaport engineering will be valuable assets to continue moving Port Everglades' expansion projects in the right direction," Henry said in a news release.
Allen has received high marks for his efforts at the port after previously serving as interim port director and Broward County's CFO. He was honored as a South Florida Business Journal Ultimate CEO in 2010.
Cernak has served as port director and CEO for the Port of Galveston since 1999. During his tenure, the port's revenue doubled and it became the top cruise home port in the Gulf of Mexico, the news release said.
